The type species within the genus Ulva is Ulva lactuca, lactuca being Latin for "lettuce". The genus also includes the species previously classified under the genus Enteromorpha, the former members of which are known under the common name green nori. Enteromorpha spp. is a marine seaweed present almost year round.

showed 10- to 50-fold higher abundances of overwintering microscopic forms (up to 330 individuals cm−2) than P. littoralis. Moreover, we found continuous production of spores (up to 1.2 million settling spores m−2 h−1) from April to October in Enteromorpha spp., while there was evidence of only a short reproductive period in Pilayella. Enteromorpha spp. germination. Preserved samples were dyed with Lugol's solution (2 g potassium iodide and thereafter 1 g iodine dissolved in 100 m1 distilled water) which made Enteromorpha spp. germlings more conspicuous on hydrobiid shells and thus facilitated identification.

Large quantities of filamentous green algae (Enteromorpha spp.) have regularly occurred on muddy and sandy tidal flats in Königshafen, on the island of Sylt (North Sea), since 1979 — covering the sediments in thick mats during the summer months. While spores ofEnteromorpha were encountered in both mud and sand, germling formation was restricted to sand. However, mud snails (Hydrobia ulvae

Free swimming Dinophilus taeniatus are found October to June lives in tidal pools with the diatom Enteromorpha spp. and Ulva lactuca.Numbers peak March to April and decline with rising temperature and lesser diatom abundances, the decline is due to death of reproducing adults and obligatory encystment of juveniles.

The protein of this seaweed has a high digestibility (98%). Salmonella was not found and mesophyllic aerobic and fecal coliform did not exceed the norm. Enteromorpha spp.
Enteromorpha spp. In factorial laboratory experiments including temperature and light, there were clear differ-ences in timing of germination. P. littoralis germinated at 5°C whereas Enteromorpha spp. required tempera-tures of 10-15°C for germination. In contrast, we detected only minor differences in growth response

with annual, bloom‐forming algae such as Enteromorpha spp. Grazing, however, can counteract eutrophication by eliminating the annual algae’s susceptible recruits. Recently, accumulating evidence has suggested that Enteromorpha clathrata polysaccharide (ECP) could contribute to the treatment of diseases. However, as a promising candidate for marine drug development, although ECP has been extensively studied, less consideration has been given to exploring its effect on gut microbiota. In this light, given the critical role of gut microbiota in health and The aim of this study was to quantify field growth rates of Enteromorpha spp. and to compare macroalgal growth with and without macrofaunal grazer effects in the south arm of the Mondego estuary. From January 1996 to January 1997, Enteromorpha growth was characterised by null ar very low values in winter and late Chemical analysis indicated that Enteromorpha spp.
